City Analysis

City Intelligence Report

Q1 2026 — Updated quarterly by the City Momentum research team.

Chennai's metro expansion is the defining infrastructure story of the city's current decade. The Phase 2 network — at 118 km, the largest metro project under execution in India by corridor length — is quietly reshaping the city's mobility geography, with the OMR tech corridor and the northern port zone finally getting rail connectivity after two decades of advocacy.

Industrial momentum, however, lags Chennai's infrastructure capability. The Cheyyur ultra-mega power plant remains stalled, and the SIPCOT Oragadam Phase 3 land allocation has been tied up in litigation since 2022. The port-led industrial corridor south of the city is the most promising near-term catalyst, with the Kattupalli expansion expected to unlock 15,000 acres of logistics and manufacturing land.
