Coimbatore is the smallest city in the Index and the most underrated. Its textile and engineering industries — which collectively account for over 30% of India's knitwear exports — generate consistent private investment in industrial infrastructure even when state project execution is slow.
The metro approval is the most significant infrastructure event in the city's recent history. At ₹6,099 crore for 37.6 km, it is among the most cost-efficient metro projects approved in India, benefiting from relatively flat terrain and lower land costs than tier-1 cities. Execution will determine whether Coimbatore emerges as a model for mid-sized city transit planning.
The airport expansion is nearing completion and will meaningfully improve the city's connectivity to Chennai, Mumbai, and direct international routes to the Gulf. Coimbatore's trajectory depends on whether the metro and TIDEL Park SEZ together attract the next layer of IT investment that the city has been targeting since 2018.
