City Analysis
City Intelligence Report
Q1 2026 — Updated quarterly by the City Momentum research team.
Kolkata's infrastructure story in 2026 is defined by the completion of a decade-long metro backlog rather than a new wave of investment. The East–West corridor's underwater section — technically the most ambitious metro construction in Indian history — opened in March 2024 and has been a genuine point of civic pride. The Joka–Esplanade extension is within 18 months of completion.
Beyond metro, the picture is more cautious. The port modernisation at Haldia is moving, but Kolkata's industrial score remains the lowest in the top 10, reflecting the state's historically difficult investment climate. New Town Rajarhat continues to attract IT tenants, but at a pace that trails Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai by a significant margin.
The city's trajectory score is 'same' — not declining, but not accelerating. The infrastructure pipeline for 2026–28 is thinner than comparable cities. Without a significant new industrial anchor or expanded metro phase, Kolkata risks slipping relative to the fast movers below it in the rankings.
